چکیده

Abstract Maximize Presupposition! (MP), as originally proposed in Heim (Semantik: Ein internationales Handbuch der zeitgenössischen Forschung, pp. 487–535, 1991) and developed subsequent works, offers an account of the otherwise mysterious unassertability a variety sentences. At core MP is idea that speakers are urged to use sentence ψ over ϕ if contributes same new information , yet carries stronger presupposition. While has been refined many ways throughout years, most (if not all) its formulations have retained this characterisation MP-competition. Recently, however, empirical adequacy questioned light certain newly discovered cases infelicitous, despite meeting MP-competition conditions. This led some researchers broaden scope MP, extending it competition between sentences which contextually equivalent (Spector Sudo Linguistics Philosophy 40(5):473–517, 2017) whose presuppositions satisfied context (Anvari Proceedings Semantics Linguistic Theory 28, 711–726, 2018; Manuscript, IJN-ENS, 2019). In paper, we present body evidence showing these sometimes too liberal, restrictive: they overgenerate infelicity for felicitous while leaving minimally different unaccounted for. We propose alternative, implicature-based approach stemming from Magri (PhD dissertation, MIT, 2009), Meyer 2013), Marty 2017), reintroduces contextual equivalence presupposition satisfaction form through notion relevance. shown classical novel cases. Projecting Presuppositions with Scalar Implicatures

I present a system which reconciles free choice permission effect with other scalar implicatures. The core idea is to cluster together alternatives which are obtained by similar transformations of the original sentence (e.g., replacement of a given item with a stronger item). Interestingly, this system can be extended to account for presupposition projection.

Computing Presuppositions and Implicatures in Mathematical Discourse

In any well-written mathematical discourse a certain amount of mathematical and meta-mathematical knowledge is presupposed and implied. We give an account on presuppositions and implicatures in mathematical discourse and describe an architecture that allows to effectively interpret them. Our approach heavily relies on proof methods that capture common patterns of argumentation in mathematical d...

Computing Presuppositions by Contextual Reasoning

This paper describes how automated deduction methods for natural language processing can be applied more efficiently by encoding context in a more elaborate way. Our work is based on formal approaches to context, and we provide a tableau calculus for contextual reasoning. This is explained by considering an example from the problem area of presupposition projection.

The Presuppositions of Soft Triggers are Obligatory Scalar Implicatures

Presupposition triggers can be divided in two groups, ‘soft’ and ‘hard,’ based on whether the presuppositions they give rise to are easily defeasible and whether they project uniformly in quantificational sentences (Abusch 2002, 2010, Charlow 2009). Recently, two ideas have been put forward in the literature in connection to this problem. First, soft triggers should be thought of as non-presupp...
